Out of nowhere I am suddenly a bona fide member of the netbook craze, and I am very impressed with this Laptop Battery battery little guy! This review will highlight the best and worst aspects of the Acer Aspire One Netbook.

Introduction

For fear of being limited by the size and hardware, I have doggedly resisted the urge to buy a Netbook. However, recently I had the chance to use and review the wonderful Acer Apire One Netbook.Acer Aspire One.

First Impressions

Obviously for £200 ($365.94 US), I was expecting everything to be encased in plastic. That plastic is not too brittle or too thin, and the quality of the enclosure and the rest of the machine is perfect. The case itself, and more importantly the keyboard, feel very solid. The hinge for the screen looks even more robust than the hinges Apple uses on their current MacBook range, making me YD626 battery confident that I could take this with me on a train or to university without fear of it being damaged.

So Light!

Folded and tucked away in the supplied slipcase, the Aspire One is about the same size as a large paperback book, though it weighs much less. Compared to carrying a 15.4" laptop around all day, the Aspire One is a breeze to hold in one hand. The size is exactly right, with a near full size keyboard that is easy to touch-type on. The 8.9” LCD at 1024×600 is cramped but not unusably so. The bigger 10” Asus feels (and costs) much more like a full size laptop, and the keyboard on the MM165 battery equivalent 8.9” EeePC is too small to touch type on.

Storage

512MB of SDRAM with 8GB Solid State Drive might seem very small, especially when you subtract the 1GB swap partition from the tally. As shipped, there is a little over 3.5GB left for user files. None-the-less, Acer has cleverly provided a second SD card slot that is merged with the internal 8GB disk using overlays: insert an 8GB SD card, and the primary partition will gain an additional 8GB of space without repartitioning or funky mount commands.

For those that don’t need a warranty, there is a vacant SDRAM slot inside the case that will take a 1GB memory stick should you need it. In practice, when surfing with Latitude D830 battery Firefox or writing in Open Office, the machine barely touches the swap partition, so I’m not sure that the extra RAM is necessary in any case

Other Hardware Bits

The speakers in the Aspire One are nothing short of awesome. It’s pretty annoying to have to strain to hear movie dialog on the crappy speakers built in to my £600 laptop, but the Aspire One not only has oodles of volume, but a better bass frequency response, at least when it’s sitting on something solid like a table.

There are 3 USB slots, so adding a mouse, printer, and external drive without a USB hub is no problem. The only real letdown is the dreadful battery life. If I turn down the brightness, switch off Wi-Fi, and use non-CPU intensive applications, I can squeeze a little over 2.5 hours between Latitude D820 battery visits to a power point. The other compromises Acer have made are a lack of built in Bluetooth (you’ll need a tiny USB adapter) and an optical drive (you can make a bootable USB stick from the restore disk using another machine).

Software

The Aspire One comes preinstalled with Linpus Linux, which in turn is based on Fedora Core 8. I’m not really a fan of RPM distributions, but Acer have tuned this installation to the point where it will resume from suspend in around 10 seconds and cold boot to the desktop in less than 20 seconds, so I’m reluctant to change.

There's no doubt that the distribution is aimed at casual users, but as I’ve said before, this is still Linux so it’s not impossible to TD175 battery tweak anything.

One final note is that Ubuntu is being actively ported to the Aspire One, and is in the process of ironing out the last few wrinkles as I write.

Conclusion

The Aspire One is not without its flaws, and for a power user, even the OS needs a good bit of tinkering to get the full potential out of the machine. There is a great user community already, and plenty of information on how to best make use of this little PC764 battery marvel.

While traditionally known more for products like televisions and cell phones, Samsung's netbooks have made quite an impact. The key to Samsung's success has been its outstanding keyboards combined with great screens and solid battery life. The Samsung's keyboard is one of the largest in the industry, but it isn't island-styled, giving the netbook a feel more akin to a Thinkpad than 8N544 battery a Mac. The screen is wonderful in every way except for viewing angles. It is also glossy - those buyers wanting a matte display should steer towards the older NC10. It provides superior all round 2D and 3D performance, largely thanks to the Radeon HD 2400 graphics card, 3GB Ram and chipset. Although not up there with the flying machines in terms of spec or design the HP Compaq 2510P is a solid performer in the ‘ultra’ notebook range. It is designed primarily for the business user and with a solid stylish blue / silver casing it looks the part. Offering lightweight handling for easy portability but somewhat average operability, it is a mix and match mobile notebook. But with a moderate price tag and slick dimensions the HP 2510P is an affordable option for the business or home user.

Slightly larger than other ultra portable notebooks Presario 2500(compaq 2500 battery) , but at 1.5kg it is in no way an eye-sore or difficult to handle during use. Furthermore with a compact yet robust casing it can withstand various degrees’ of abuse and still perform as expected. The 12.1” ‘IllumiLite’ display provides superb LED backlit visuals. The screen portrays a vibrant, smooth image, and contrast and brightness are second to none. It is sometimes apparent that color appears faded during transition, but this is rare and more the result of the graphics card being integrated onto the processor, thus having to share resource allocation with other processing tasks. As a component part the screen is durable, with an excellent locking mechanism and adds no discernable weight to the unit. Furthermore, whereas LED screens in general are a heavy burden on battery power, the HP 2510P screen is very energy efficient.

In terms of performance the 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo processor with integrated graphics won’t impress the advanced gamer or high-tech business user. In short it just Presario 2100(compaq 2100) doesn’t deliver particularly fast performance even with such basic application delivery as word processing, presentation creation and multimedia assignments. It is also only equipped with 1GB memory which is the minimum requirement for such a device. Thus it is fine when tasks are run individually, but during multi tasking or graphics intensive, processor hungry application delivery the HP 2510P is an average performer at best. Coming with Windows Vista Business as standard it would be nice to see 2GB RAM and a more powerful chipset to power such an operating system and its accompanying dynamic graphical interface. On the plus side, the low spec of processor is very good at minimizing heat, making the notebook comfortable to use on the knee or from the hand.

The 100GB HDD is more than adequate for a portable notebook but it would be much better if HP were to offer a Solid State HDD. Simply put the current storage unit is neither robust enough nor quick enough to retrieve information for users on the go. Running at 4200rpm it doesn’t perform well under pressure and while 100GB is an adequate amount of storage space, its lack of speed really lets it down. Such HDD’s are also known to be temperamental when used in a 319411-001 battery mobile unit as they aren’t shock resistant.

The HP 2510P does have a nice full size keyboard which is excellent for an ultra portable notebook. Keys are firm yet responsive but as with all notebook style keyboards the function keys can be a little ‘fiddly’ to use. Similarly the touchpad is one of the best in class. Nicely balancing size and practicality with ease of use. What is more, it doesn’t encroach onto the wrist rest areas of the notebook so you are unlikely to have mishaps by inadvertently navigating to parts of the screen / launching applications you don’t want.

With Ethernet, DVI, FireWire, SD card reader, fingerprint sensor, and ports for serial and parallel connections, video and audio, USB (x2) and monitor out, the HP 2510P F4812A battery has an array of multimedia and communications slots for 3rd party hardware connectivity. It would be nice however to see a third USB port, particularly as notebooks such as these can be temperamental when it comes to using multiple USB.

As we previously touched on, the battery life of the HP 2510P is exceptional. Interchangeable, unlike the Apple MacBook Air, the standard six cell battery pack provides an outstanding six hours of power when running standard applications over either a wired or wireless connection. This means that users can get considerably longer use from the HP 2510P than they can from many of the other notebooks in this category. However, it is worth pointing out that the six and nine cell F4809A battery packs do stick out of the back of the unit slightly, and while this doesn’t add noticeable weight, it knocks the notebooks slick rectangular elegance.

Conclusion

The HP 2510P is a sound notebook for a user in the market for a portable PC at an affordable price. It is much improved from its predecessor the HP NC2400, with an integrated touchpad, optical drive, more robust casing and enhanced screen display. At under $2000 it is not exactly cheap and cheerful but it is a notebook that can withstand considerable knocks and scrapes, and has best in class battery life. That said the processor and memory leave a lot to be desired, and do not perform half as well as other portable notebooks. It would also be nice to see HP install a Solid State HDD, Webcam and a F4098A battery third USB slot.

With this in mind the HP Compaq 2510P is very much a no frills, built for business notebook. Functional but without the whistles and bells of other models as discussed in this review series. If there were one word to describe the HP 2510P it would be ‘average’. That may be harsh considering its well balanced design and power saving capabilities, which truly are exceptional, but overall if a portable notebook takes too long to run applications it won’t last long in the fast paced world of technology development, where applications and services demand more and more processing power.

APM is a BIOS program, meaning that it exists independent of the operating Laptop Battery system. How much exactly will using my laptop on AC destroy my battery

From what I've read, when the laptop is in AC with the Laptop Battery battery inside, every now and then the battery gets below a certain threshold, and the computer tops off the battery (trickle charging). This "burns" a charge cycle, reducing battery life.

My question is: what's that threshold? and exactly how much time is this now and then? is it like once every five minutes, once every hour or once every day? And how is the effect in battery life compared to full cycles?

Justification: I use my laptop mostly at home, when I have AC always available. Right now I use it some 2 or 3 times a day, 2-3 hours each time. I really don't want to take the PB994A battery off, so, my decision is between plugging it on the wall whenever I'll use it, or alternating using it discharging the battery (until 10%) then charging again on AC (until 100%). I assume leaving it always plugged is not an option (I don't need it to be on when I'm not using it).

By the way, is there a problem if I leave the charger always plugged on the wall, even when it's not plugged on the computer?

Your use pattern sounds like desktop, not laptop. (It prompts the question of why you care, almost. Mostly, you've got an integral UPS!)

Anecdotally, I use my 4 year old Thinkpad A31p 99% of the time plugged into AC, and that's 8 hours/day, 5 days a week on and plugged in the rest of the time. I have dual batteries. THey have always lasted an hour or two, but when I am 337607-003 portable, I am outside and I use the display on bright.

I'd run the battery down every month or two to see how it's doing, but I'd resist making any changes to personal use patterns. You've probably got a Lithium Ion battery pack, and the charger is going to take care of it just fine.

The normal curve applies to your individual battery (and computer for that matter) and you may have an outlier... a very good one or very bad one. (goshling's 337607-001 battery sounds like one, though his other problems sound suspcious for wiring/connector issues. Some of these batteries have integral temperature sensors and these are critical for maintaining proper charge profiles for some battery species. His unit could be actively killing his battery. )

Batteries are going to have a certain number of charge/discharge cycles, a certain shelf life charged/uncharged, and they are not going to last forever. Neither is the laptop. Budget for a replacement if you think you are going to keep it for a decade. You've got a brand name box, and a lot of engineering went into that part of the laptop Pavilion ZT3000, so worry is a little wasted, methinks.

Tweaking the Graphics Card

When performing basic 2D tasks, such as web browsing or other tasks, the speed/quality of the graphics card makes no Sony laptop battery difference. Therefore, it is in your best interest to turn down the power of the graphics card to increase battery life. The most effective way to accomplish this is to lower the clock speed of the graphics card core and memory. If you have integrated graphics, you have limited access, and can not perform ANY of the following tweaks.

Before you get started, you should find Laptop Battery out what card you have by going to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings.

Basic Tweak

If you own a recent ATI or nVidia graphics card, then you have access to a basic clock tweaking feature. Go to the Control Panel, access the Display, choose the Appearance tab, and click on Advanced Settings. Depending on the model of your graphics card, there may be automatic clock reducing features. Look for names such as POWERPLAY and configure appropriately (set to Max Battery when not using 3D graphics).

Disabling Components

To disable a component, right click on "My Computer" and select "Hardware." Then, click on the "Device Manager" button. Decrease LCD brightness

Another method in maximizing battery life is setting the screen brightness.'Dim the LCD screen to the lowest comfortable level to achieve maximum battery life. If you're going to watch a DVD movie, set the brightness to its lowest if the lights in the surrounding room are off.

Standby/Hibernate

Place your PCGA-BP2S computer on Standby as often as possible. When you are not using your computer for a while, place your computer into Hibernate; and when you are not using it for the time being, shut down your computer.

You can recover the previous work state of your computer faster when your computer is in Hibernate than when it is shut down. If your computer is on Standby, it takes a much shorter time to recover the work state as compared with recovery from Hibernate.

Disabling Processes

Running many unnecessary programs will cause your CPU to run harder, and thus use more energy. Therefore, removing any unecessary processes to save battery power.

Spyware/Virii/Hackers

Spyware and virii are destructive programs that can cause your CPU to work for them, and should be removed at once. Hackers can put virii and other malicious programs on your PCGA-BP2R laptop as well, causing your CPU to work more often. Even if battery life is not a problem, it is always good to maintain a secure laptop.

Be sure to keep your virus scanner updated at all times.

AVG Antivirus is a great FREE antivirus scanner.

Spybot S&D, as well as Ad-aware, are great FREE anti-spyware programs. Download both, since they are not all 100% effective.

Using a firewall can prevent hackers from accessing your laptop, and should be active at all times. Windows has a built-in firewall (Windows XP SP2 and above) that works fine. ZoneAlarm is a great FREE firewall, better than the built-in Windows firewall.

Keeping Windows updated through patches is always a good idea to prevent hacker attacks. A common way for hackers to access your computer is through Internet Explorer. Even the latest patched version still has security "holes." Download Firefox, the best FREE web browser, to alleviate these problems.

Unnecessary Startup Processes

Laptops bought from PCGA-BP2NY companies such as Dell, Compaq, Gateway, Emachines, IBM, etc, have many'unnecessary startup programs. Disabling these programs not only saves battery life, but also saves precious RAM. By removing these programs from the startup repretoire, you also have the advantage of having a faster startup time.

First, select "Run..." in the Start menu.

Then, input "msconfig" into the field.

Access the "Startup" tab, and take a look at the programs you have starting up. Disable'everything that you don't need. Examples of programs that you need include:

ATI Tool (from the Laptop Underclock/Undervolt guide)

RM Clock (from the Laptop Underclock/Undervolt guide)

ctfmon

MSN/Yahoo/Trillian

Misc. hardware programs, eg for a HP printer

Virus scan

Experiment! Another good idea is to disable everything, then take a look at what's missing that you need, find the program that you need PCGA-BP2NX (take a look at the Command - it shows where the program is located), and enable it. Then, repeat. If you don't know what a program is, you should probably disable it.

Next, click on the "Services" tab. Check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" tab. Although you can disable many Microsoft services to further increase performance, we are not going to cover it. You can search on the internet for guides that will help you with this. It's a lot more difficult, and the results are different for each person.

Again, do as you did for the PCGA-BP1N Startup tab. Keep everything that you think you might need. Be sure to keep your Antivirus scanner service. Many program services are just to aid in load times, or other trivial tasks. Disable them, then test the program to see if it still works.

Been dreaming of the days when your computer would keep track of where you are and say, "Hi" when you sit down to work? Freeware applications Home Zone and Home and Away can keep track of your Bluetooth phone or the network you're connected to (respectively) and mount networked VGP-BPS5 drives, set default printers, adjust your volume, pause/play iTunes or set your IM status based on, for example, how close you (and your phone) are to your computer. Home Zone, in particular, offers tons of great options. Turn Your Laptop into an Anti-Theft Device

First of all, let's assume that you're already taking basic precautions with your data, meaning you've set a strong password on your user account (and you've verified that it's not super-easy to crack) and maybe you're even encrypting your data. Fact is, no matter how secure your data is in the digital world, your laptop is disturbingly simple to pick up and walk off with.

Laptop batteries Laptop Battery come in all shapes and sizes also differ in their chemical composition. The chemistry of a battery refers to the chemical make-up of the cells inside the outer casing. The most common chemistries used in laptop batteries are:

Li-Ion (Lithium Ion) - This is becoming the dominant technology due to its excellent power to weight ratio. Is It Time for a New Battery

At some point, even smart power management can’t overcome the physics of an aging battery Toshiba Laptop Battery . When testing batteries for this article, I found a great example of battery neglect: an iBook that I’d been using as a music server had remained plugged in at the same location for a couple of years. Its lithium-ion battery registered an embarrassing 1 hour and 21 minutes of life with the Energy Saver options set to Longest Battery Life. A replacement battery from BTI clocked in with a more respectable 3 hours and 57 minutes.

It’s useful to measure your Satellite A60-662 battery’s capacity over time. To determine a battery’s capacity, use a utility such as Jeremy Kezer’s XBattery ($15) or Rayner Software’s iBatt ($15). iBatt compares your battery’s capacity with a median of other iBatt users’ batteries, and it helps determine whether you need a replacement. If the battery provides less than 50 percent of its original capacity and you’re still covered by the laptop’s one-year warranty (or Apple Care’s three-year warranty), Apple will replace the Satellite 1900 battery at no cost.

If you’re using a much older model, such as a PowerBook 1400cs, your only option is to turn to a third-party battery vendor such as BTI or Lind Electronics since Apple no longer sells batteries for older models. Nearly all battery and computer vendors sell replacement batteries for current models. To be competitive, some companies offer higher-capacity batteries that benefit from improvements in battery technology since the original models were introduced.

For more backup Tecra 9100 battery power, look into buying an external battery such as the Valence N-Charge ($300)—when fully powered, it acts as a self-contained AC adapter that keeps your internal battery charged for up to ten hours. (But remember, that’s the manufacturer’s best-case scenario.) For some frequent travelers, this type of device my be preferable to juggling multiple battery packs, though it adds about three pounds to your bag.

And remember that when you buy a new battery, you must get rid of the old battery properly. Organizations such as the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation ensure that the batteries’ dangerous components are safely recycled and disposed of.

Power On

Taking care of your Tecra 9000 laptop battery isn’t too difficult: don’t drop it, throw it, submerge it, or set it on fire. Taking care of the battery is a bit more complicated. But by managing your power—calibrating the battery when you first get it, charging and discharging it to prevent premature decay, and extending your portable capabilities with extra batteries and chargers—you can get much more out of your iBook or PowerBook.

According to Apple, a 15-inch aluminum PowerBook G4 Fujitsu Laptop Battery will operate for nearly four and a half hours before putting itself to sleep. But that’s like saying that a four-person tent can hold four people—it’s technically possible but not usually realistic. I’ll show you how to get the most life and performance out of your PowerBook or iBook battery, so you won’t be stuck without juice when you really need it.

No rechargeable FPCBP95 batteries last forever. In fact, the lithium-ion batteries in today’s iBooks and PowerBooks begin to degrade as soon as they’re shipped from the factory.

Calibrate the Battery New Apple batteries, those included with a machine and those bought separately, arrive partially charged and need to be calibrated. This procedure provides a baseline for the processor built into the battery, so the processor can effectively regulate power consumption. To calibrate your battery, first plug in the laptop and charge the battery to 100 percent capacity; the light at the end of the Apple-supplied power cable will go from orange to green when the battery is fully charged. Next, unplug the power adapter and let the battery run down. The machine will put itself to sleep and refuse to wake up. Plug the adapter in again and fully recharge the battery. (You can use the laptop as you normally would during the calibration process.) You need to calibrate the FPCBP63 battery only once.

Work Smart It’s nice to have desktop power on your lap, but do you need to use all that power all the time? When your laptop is running on battery power, use the Energy Saver preference pane to minimize performance and maximize battery life. From the Optimize Energy Settings pop-up menu, choose Longest Battery Life, which puts the hard disk to sleep when possible and reduces the processor’s performance.

Also, use the laptop’s FPCBP68 battery brightness-control keys (usually F1 and F2, depending on the model) to dim the screen’s backlight. And if you don’t need AirPort and Bluetooth, turn them off; even if no other devices are nearby, the wireless radios in the laptop continually scan for networks.

Store the Battery Properly When it’s asleep, a laptop steals power from its battery to maintain the contents of its memory. If you won’t be using the computer for several days, putting it to sleep could drain the battery. Instead, charge the battery to about 40 or 50 percent capacity and shut the computer down. If you need to store a battery for six months or more, remove it from the machine and keep FPCBP77 battery it in a place that won’t get too hot or too cold (between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit).

Stay in Charge

How you charge the battery is just as important as how you discharge it. Current iBooks and PowerBooks ship with a 65-watt AC adapter that powers the machine and recharges the battery. If you’ve moved up from an iBook (dual USB) or a Titanium PowerBook G4, you can use the older machine’s 45-watt adapter as an extra charger for the new Macs, but Apple doesn’t recommend it: that wattage is enough to keep you working but not enough to charge the FPCBP80 battery at the same time.

Of course, you don’t have to use Apple’s chargers. The iAdapter2, sold by Lind Electronics ($70), is lighter and more compact than Apple’s little white bricks. Madsonline sells the diminutive, 45-watt MicroAdapter ($78) for previous-generation iBooks and PowerBooks. Kensington’s Universal Laptop Power Supply ($120) can deliver 90 watts of power and is smart enough to judge how much wattage your laptop can safely handle. It includes a car adapter for charging on the road, and it features several plug tips that allow the power supply to work with other Satellite 2100 laptop battery models.

Don’t Use Just the AC Adapter If you always plug your laptop into the wall while you work, the battery doesn’t discharge; its electrons stagnate, and the battery’s life span is reduced. Even if you usually use an AC adapter, make a point of working from the battery once a month and then recharging.

Recharge Smart Nickel-cadmium batteries suffered from the “memory effect”—if you didn’t fully discharge a nickel-cadmium battery occasionally, some of its capacity would become unusable until you ran the battery to zero and charged it up again. Although lithium-ion batteries don’t suffer from the memory effect, they do need to have their electrons jostled occasionally to prevent premature decay. Try to complete a full charge-and-discharge cycle at least once per month. This is the most important step. Missing this step will lead to the end of your computer ThinkPad R51 laptop battery. We need to seal this from water. This is where you will use your silicon or hot glue. I personally recomend silicon for many reasons.

1. It is heat resistant and won't melt if put on a heatsink.

2. It is more water resistance.

3. It is more durable.

Start with the processor. This is the MOST important part of the computer and also the most expensive to replace. Take all heatsinks off and make a sqare around the processor with the silicon. After the thinkpad exploded

Alan was on the other side of the room from the laptop. I was elsewhere. He yelled out, I ambled towards Laptop Battery the room in my own good time, and then I heard Fire! Real fire! Call the fire brigade, now! and I speeded up a bit.

From Alan subsequently, I gather there was an explosion and flying pieces of laptop, and a fireball, and a couple of fires started where (presumably) boiling battery landed, and one fragment smashed an LCD monitor. And then there was smoke and smell (there is still smell) and smoke IBM Laptop Battery alarm wailing and firemen and sirens and paramedics (happily unneeded) and police and a man with a notebook asking questions for the fire report.

And now there is black dust everywhere in the room and a stench in the house but remarkably little damage. Hack allows copying of TiVo recordings

While initially tolerant of hackers modifying its 40Y6797 laptop battery product, TiVo may have been unprepared for the power of open source. A new software utility has surfaced with the ability to extract digital video directly off the recording unit, raising numerous copyright concerns. With an added network card, TiVo users may now archive and view recorded television shows on a computer.
